Laura Pous-Tio slays Olga Govortsova in round one – Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem 2012
Spanish contender, Laura Pous-Tio, crushed the Belarusian starlet, Olga Govortsova, with a breadstick at the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem 2012 on Tuesday. She nudged up a 6-2, 6-1 victory against the world number 72 to breeze into the second
round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International tournament taking place in Fes, Morocco.
The Spanish veteran outsmarted Govortsova for the first time in their third encounter after displaying top class performance at this clay court event. After earning the glory in one hour and 16 minutes, Pous-Tio not only avenged her loss at the Barcelona
Ladies Open earlier this season but also secured a place in the round of 16.
Pous-Tio stormed into the Royal Tennis Club de Fes and stroke out the opening three games in a row with two breaks of serve. Apart from losing her serve in the fourth game, she remained focused and capitalised on another break chance in the seventh game.
She then served out the opener with a 6-2 score line through her brilliant forehands in the last game.
Ranked 110th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Pous-Tio maintained her intensity in the following set and earned the desiderated break in the opening game. Despite losing her serve in the very next game, she unleashed barrage of groundstrokes to wipe
out the following five games in a row. The Spaniard blocked one out of two breakpoints she faced and cashed in four out of five break opportunities to pull out the set with a breadstick.
The Belarusian displayed drastic performance throughout this battle. She spilled five double faults and regardless of producing a higher first serve share, Govortsova availed only 12 out of 31 points on it.
Pous-Tio will next encounter the Dutch rising star, Arantxa Rus, who stunned seventh seeded Klara Zakopalova in a three set thriller. Rus fended off nine out of 17 breakpoints she came across and capitalised on eight out of 10 break chances to formulate
a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(9) victory. She also clobbered a better first serve share of 78 per cent and availed 47 out of 90 points on it.
