Laura Robson aiming for further upsets at US Open Championships – Tennis News
Booming British starlet, Laura Robson, has continued her stunning run of form at the US Open Grand Slam Championships and is aiming to register further surprising results in the rounds to come. The 18-year-old Brit has already
silenced two big guns in the tournament so far and is posing a serious threat to other contestants in the draw.
Currently holding the 89th spot in the WTA Premier Rankings, Robson has been the real heartthrob of British tennis this season. She teamed up with the fourth ranked Scott, Andy Murray, and brought home a silver medal
from the Olympic Games last month. Her form took a major leap since then and she has been the real eye-catcher in the US Open this season.
Robson earned the limelight with her memorable victory over the former world number one and three-time US Open champion, Kim Clijsters, in the second round of the tournament. She edged past the Belgian veteran in straight sets,
7-6(4), 7-6(5), to register one of the biggest upsets of the tournament earlier this week. Her victory over Clijsters shall always be remembered, as it was the last match for the former Belgian champ on the WTA Tour.
For many critics, her second round victory was a mere fluke but she proved everyone wrong with her mind-blowing performance against the former French Open champion, Li Na of China. The unseeded Brit teenager registered her second
upset victory over the world number eight opponent in three gruelling sets, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2, to make it through to the fourth round of the mega event at the Flushing Meadows Park.
"I had the opportunity to win it in two. It was a really close tie-break, and at 5-all she played two really good points," Robson said. "I knew if I kept playing the way I was and kept playing how I started the first set, very
aggressive and accelerating on my forehand when I could, I knew she would struggle. I wasn't really looking past the first round, and when I heard I was playing Li Na after I played Kim, I didn't really think anything. I just knew it was going to be an extremely
tough match, which it was, and that she's a great player.”
Robson’s win over Li Na has caught sight of all tennis followers and she risen to whole new level after that. The Brit youngster is extremely talented and to perform so well at such elite platform will certainly boost her confidence.
She will face the defending champion, Samantha Stosur of Australia, in the fourth round brawl.
