Laura Robson and Heather Watson jointly named Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year – Tennis News
Two best friends from Great Britain have made a special name for themselves in the field of tennis with a breakthrough year in 2012. These are the 18-year-old Laura Robson and the 20-year-old Heather Watson. Both these players
are separated by just four ranks in the world, Watson being the superior with a ranking of world number 49 at the year-end.
It was a classic season for both athletes. Recently, the duo was jointly awarded the honour of being the Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year. The award distribution ceremony was held at London and both athletes were present in
the arena.
Watson said, “It just feels kind of right that we are joint winners. I would have cheered for Laura going up to get it and she would have done the same for me. What we have is a friendly rivalry - we are very competitive and want
to do better than the other on court, but we are also very supportive of one another.”
The 53rd ranked Briton wore a white dress with fancy work while the chequered shiny colourful cloth was worn by Watson. The left-handed Robson was the first to enter the limelight with a successful breakthrough at the
Australian Open qualifiers that confirmed her place in the main round. She did the same at the Roland Garros French Open as well and kept in the race for the Briton number one spot.
Robson was just a victory close in realizing her dream of winning the first Women Tennis Association title realized her dream at the Guangzhou International Women's Open. She entered the main draw as an un-seeded player but trashed
three superior ranked contenders before losing out an enthralling three-set final to Su-Wei Hsieh. It was her chance to end a 24-year drought in the British women tennis history by winning a title but she couldn’t lift the trophy.
The left-handed Robson did end up as the runners-up in the mixed doubles category of the London Olympics along with Andy Murray; winning the Silver Medal.
Watson reached the third round of Wimbledon at June that created a lot of hype. The 20-year-old Briton commenced her breakthrough at the HP Japan Open in Osaka and became the first British lady to win a WTA title since 1988. She
surpassed her best friend Robson in the rankings with that cracking run and entered the Top-50 category of players by the year-end.
