Laura Robson and Heather Watson tune up for the upcoming tournaments – Tennis News
London Olympics silver medallist, Laura Robson, and her compatriot, Heather Watson, started their training for 2013 Australian Open Grand Slam. The two British contenders intend perk up in order to bring laurels to their homeland.
Ranked 53rd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Robson, skilfully made it through the initial qualifying rounds of the Australian Open 2012, giving all her rival’s
straight-set defeats. In the first round, she faced a straight loss at the hands of the world number 13, Jelena Jankovic. However, for the major part of the earlier season, she was unable to break away the glass ceiling.
A similar trend prevailed in the French Open Grand Slam, as she was unable to match the strength of the 30-year-old Spanish challenger, Anabel Medina Garrigues. At the Internazionali Femminili Palermo, Robson made it through to
the semi-finals. She displayed incredible skills at 2012 Olympic Games and bagged home a silver medal in the mixed doubles. Due to outstanding game, she received the WTA Newcomer of the Year award.
On the other hand, world number 49, Watson, displayed an average performance in the beginning of season. The 20-year-old professional exhibited a decent action plan and made it until the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open held
at the hard courts of Miami.
As luck favoured her, Watson made it to the second round of the French Open but received a straight-sets loss at the hands of Julia Goerges. At the Wimbledon Championships, Watson was unable to encounter the might of the Pole number
one, Agnieszka Radwanska.
The right-hander made it until the second round of Olympic Games and suffered a straight-sets loss at the hands of the Chinese Taipei qualifier, Yung-Jan Chan. The British senior has immense potential to take over all the over
powering odds. She became the first British tennis professional to become the WTA champion in 24 years by clinching her victory at the HP Japan Women’s Open held at the hard courts of Osaka.
With sheer hard work and effort, the two British participants have a fair chance to improve their world rankings and eventually become world top-10.
