Laura Robson awarded the title of WTA Newcomer of the Year – Tennis News

World number 53, Laura Robson, registered a terrific season in 2012. She is just 18 years old but possesses a technique of a world class athlete; cashes in the advantage of being a left-handed player with full affect and doesn’t
consider herself as an underdog in any draw. She has tested a lot of elite opponents to their limits and stunned most of them in the current season. She also enjoyed the reign as the number one Briton player before her best friend, the 20-year-old Heather
Watson won her maiden title and surpassed her in the world rankings.
Robson said, “It's a huge honour to have won the 2012 WTA Newcomer of the Year award. I looked at the list of past winners and it's certainly a very impressive line-up that includes many of my idols growing up - I hope that I can
go on to achieve close to what many of the past winners have achieved in their careers. 2012 has been a very enjoyable year for me and I look forward to building on the progress that I have made in 2012 and the season ahead.” She further added, “There has
been a few great moments this past year; making the Olympic team and coming away with a silver medal in the mixed doubles.”
The series of good performances began at the Australian Open where the teenager qualified for the main round after a hard fought struggle in the qualifying rounds. However, she couldn’t survive a single round at Melbourne but she
did sent a strong message. She had a slight slump in the form following the first Grand Slam Championship where she lost in the opening round of PTT Pattaya Open, Qatar Ladies Open and BNP Paribas Open as well.
Robson’s biggest breakthrough for the left-handed Briton was at the US Open in New York where she reached the fourth round of the tournament; upsetting the former world number one, Kim Clijsters, and the ninth seed Li Na in the
second and third round respectively. Prior to this achievement, the Briton had won a mixed-doubles Silver Medal at Olympics as well; teaming up with Andy Murray.
