Laura Robson beats Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor in round one - Guangzhou Int’l Women's Open 2012
World number 74, Laura Robson, was cruising along at the scores of 6-2, 3-1 when her opponent from Spain, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, pulled out of the contest due to injury. It was an unfortunate event and the 18-year-old Briton
decided to not celebrate her victory instead walked off with a few autographs to her fans. The immature victory that came in just 65 minutes helped the Briton teenager to advance into the second round of the GRC Bank Guangzhou International Women's Open.
Robson was tested to her limits in the opening game of the match but the left-handed starlet denied to bow down and fought until the end; yielded a positive return in the form of a serve hold and didn’t allow her opponent to take
an early breakthrough.
Flor was under the cosh in the first serve game as well. However, she repeated a similar performance like her opponent and hung on to the serve; making it 1-1. No drama was witnessed for the following three games as the scores
were pushed to 3-2 in favour of the 18-year-old Briton.
It was that moment when the things turned around completely in favour of the 74th ranked Robson. She broke her opponent’s serve in the sixth game and lost just one point in the following game to make it 5-2 in her favour.
The 111th ranked Spaniard couldn’t handle the pressure; surrendered earlier than expected.
The second set witnessed a trade of breakthroughs at the beginning. However, the Briton teenager regrouped to post a serve hold and make it 2-1 in her favour. Flor was under immense pressure and a miserable fall in the fourth game
added to her misery. She received some medical treatment and came back finish the game but decided to withdraw from the contest because her position wasn’t looking great.
Robson marches on into the second round of the tournament with this triumph. She will be facing the winner of the contest between the second seed Chinese star, Jie Zheng, and the Taiwanese professional, Yung-Jan Chan. Zheng is
expected to beat her opponent but the test of Robson will not be easy one at all.
