Laura Robson breaks into the Top-60’s – Tennis News
British tennis icon, Laura Robson, continues to bamboozle big guns with her amusing game style and racquet speed. She is just 18 years of age but already the number one Briton and the recent entrant in the Top-60 players of the
world. She was ranked 74 a week ago but a mind-blowing performance at Guangzhou helped her climb few steps of the ladder and occupy the 57th spot in the world rankings.
Robson was just three games away from winning the maiden title of her career but couldn’t handle the onslaught of her rival, Su-Wei Hsieh, who clinched the triumph deep in three sets. However, the victims that surrendered to the
left-handed Briton on her way to the grand finale included the likes of the second seed Chinese star Jie Zheng, her compatriot Shuai Peng and the third seed Romanian professional, Sorana Cirstea.
Talking about lack of finishing quality in the final at Guangzhou, Robson stated, “After I won the second set and led 3-0 in the third, she started playing well again and made the rallies longer, while I totally ran out of energy.
I kept fighting but just wasn't able to hit my shots as well as I had earlier in the match.”
She further added, “The more matches you play the more experience you get, and to play in a really tough final like this one in Guangzhou is a big experience for me." Champion at Guangzhou, Hsieh said of Robson, “Laura's a great
player and has been improving a lot this year, but I don't think she felt comfortable with my game.”
Robson also broke the shackles and became the first British player to play in the final of the Women Tennis Association tournament after the gap of more than two decades. Last time any Briton woman was seen contesting a final at
the elite level was Jo Durie in 1990 at Newport. So, the history books are reopened with the record breaking season for Robson. It is expected that the number one Briton will break into the Top-30 players of the world by the end of the year.
