Laura Robson brushes aside Edina Gallovits-Hall in the opener – Shenzhen Longgang Gemdale Open 2013
British tennis prodigy, Laura Robson, had an excellent beginning to her 2013 WTA season by registering a thumping victory in the opening round of Shenzhen Longgang Gemdale Open on Monday. The world number 53 took just a fraction
under an hour to overpower the unseeded Romanian contender, Edina Gallovits-Hall, in straight sets. The final scores of the match were 6-2, 6-1, in favour of the seventh seeded Brit.
It was a completely one-sided contest, with Robson dominating every second of it. The 18-year-old took off with a flyer and never looked back at her opponent. She spared merely three games for Gallovits-Hall in the entire matchup
and rocketed away to the second round of the WTA event in China.
It was the second encounter between these two and Robson finally avenged her defeat from Gallovits-Hall after almost two years. The Romanian outplayed her in the semi-final round of a tournament in Dothan, USA, registering a similar
sort of score line, 6-0, 6-2, but it was the payback time for Robson on Monday. She repaid the Romanian contender in her own coins and gave her a real beating throughout the contest en route to victory.
The overall match stats clearly show the level of domination which Robson imposed on her rival. Although she had a below par first serve precision of 42 per cent in the match, the British teenager claimed 17 out of 21 points on
it. She crafted a total of nine break opportunities and converted five of them to devastate the unseeded Romanian. On the other hand, Gallovits-Hall could barely nail one break point in the entire matchup to finish on the losing side in the end.
Robson will face another unseeded Romanian, Monica Niculescu, in her next match of the tournament later this week. Niculescu also registered a convincing straight sets victory over Saisai Zheng, 6-4, 7-5, in the opening round to
book a date with the seventh seeded British.
Second seeded French powerhouse, Marion Bartoli, also penned down a 6-1, 6-0, victory in her opening round brawl with Wing-yau Chan. Fourth seeded Taiwanese, Su-wei Hsieh, and the fifth seeded Czech, Klara Zakopalova, also won
their opening matches at the tournament.
