Laura Robson commences the sovereignty as a number one Briton – Tennis News
In the latest edition of the world rankings issued by the Women Tennis Association, Laura Robson on Great Britain has risen to world number 74 that has ultimately overpowered her best friend and compatriot, Heather Watson, and
placed her as the top ranked Briton in the world. The reign of the left-handed superstar has begun at the age of just 18.
There is still a long way to go for the teenager but the class and talent that she possesses is definitely worth a massive round of applause from everyone associated to the world of tennis.  She dismissed two supreme athletes in
the world of women tennis during the year’s last Grand Slam Championship, the US Open, in New York.
She outclassed the former world number one, Kim Clijsters, in the second round and registered her name as the last ever player to have played a professional match against the Belgian superstar as Clijsters retired at the end of
the US Open. Moreover, the 18-year-old superstar scuttled past the ninth seed Chinese former French Open Champion, Li Na, in the third round. It was a tremendous effort from the Briton who is now the best player from the part of the where she belongs to.
Watson who is just one rank lower than her compatriot will test her in the upcoming tournaments and they will most probably replace the top ranked Briton title between each other in the future. Watson is just 20-year-old as well
and both players are seeking their first ever Women Tennis Association title in the singles category. The different tour selection has hampered their doubles team play and they have not played at one side of the court for quite some time now but they are a
very strong duo when they are playing together.
Anne Keothavong and Elena Baltacha, two big names from Great Britain are ranked 80th and 141st respectively in the world rankings. It has been a very pathetic year for Baltacha who has slipped from the top
ranked Briton slot to number four.
Robson has commenced her Guangzhou Int’l Women's Open 2012 campaign in China. She outsmarted the Spanish player, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, in the opening round of the tournament and will be up against the likes of the second seed
Chinese star, Jie Zheng, in the second round contest. Zheng has an advantage of being much experience player than Robson and also playing at the home soil but there is no doubt the newly ranked number one Briton can upset her.
