Laura Robson ousts Alberta Brianti to reach round two – AEGON Trophy 2012 CH

Upcoming tennis sensation from Great Britain, Laura Robson, registered an upset against the 105th ranked Italian, Alberta Brianti, on Tuesday in Nottingham. She impressed the local supporters with her big smashing winners
down the line and across the court and posted straight sets score line of 7-5, 6-4.
The difference in the age was 14 years between the two players but the class of young gun was worth applause. She constantly kept the 32-year-old Italian under pressure and never looked like in any sort of trouble. The experience
of Brianti came to no use in front of the onslaught from her rival and she surrendered in straight sets.
Italian professional’s recent performance against the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the first round of the Roland Garros French Open where she was on the verge of pulling up a major upset with just two games
away in the second set of posting a bagel. However, she was unable to hold on the Belarusian queen in the latter part of the match but her performance definitely depicted some great recovery in her game play and this was supposed to be an easy route.
The opening set witnessed a tight battle at the start with Robson tested rigorously on her third serve game but she did well to hold on. Suddenly, the tables were turned upon the Italian and her serve was broken in the following
game. However, Brianti calmed her nerves and broke back to level the scores. A swap of breakpoints further pushed the scores to 5-5.
Robson stunned the Italian with two mind-startling winners in the following game that helped the Briton to post another breakthrough in the dying stages of the set. She held her serve to 40:15 and rounded off the opening set in
her favour.
Cautious start to the second set witnessed a gruelling battle between the two players but none stooped for the first six games of the set. However, the shackles were broken by the 18-year-old Briton who broke serve to love just
after saving three breakpoints in the previous game; kept the lead intact until the end and booked a date with her compatriot, Anne Keothavong, in the next round.
