Laura Robson retires; Akgul Amanmuradova advances to round two – Pattaya Open 2012
British booming star, Laura Robson, faced an injury-forced exit in the first round of the PTT Pattaya Open tournament. Her opponent, Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan, was leading the first set 5-2 before the she twisted her
wrist and retired from the event. It was such a disappointing scene for everyone to witness the 18-years-old, Robson, leaving the arena in pain and discomfort.
The Uzbek contestant was going through a rough time at courts having lost three of her last five encounters. She was ousted in the qualifiers of Brisbane, as well as the Australian Open tournament, whilst his Britain opponent
won the qualifying competition of the Australian Open and played against the former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, in the first round.
Robson started the match proceedings with a successful serve game. Her rival followed her footsteps and made no mistake in bagging her first serve game and pushed the scores to 1-1. Both players continued to capitalize on
their serves in the following two games as the scores progressed to 2-2. Robson’s serve was broken in the fifth game, courtesy to some outstanding shot making from the Uzbek. Amanmuradova held her serve in the following game to consolidate her position and
double the lead with the scores moving ahead to 4-2.
The German teenager served once again and despite saving three breakpoints on trot, she failed to hang on to her serve and her opponent flew away with the lead of three games; scores were 5-2 at that stage in favour of the
Uzbek. At the start of the eighth game, Robson twisted her wrist badly while playing a backhand return at full stretch. It was not the problem that erupted abruptly; she was facing wrist issues right from the start that played a major part in her five double-faults
in just three serve games.
It was such disappointing news for the British fans who were excited to see such a classic teenage talent of tennis at their disposal. Robson has announced to take a break from tennis and get her wrist checked. She will decide
about her comeback after knowing the severity of the injury and doctor’s prescription.
Amanmuradova will play the top seed Russian, Vera Zvonareva, in the second round.
