Laura Robson shines against Roberta Vinci in round two - XXV Italiacom Open 2012
Youngest contestant in the XXV Italiacom Open, Laura Robson, outplayed the second seed Italian, Roberta Vinci, to reach the first ever quarter-finals of her professional career. She squashed the local 29-year-old in straight sets
6-3, 7-5 utilizing an hour and 33 minutes on the eve of Thursday.
World number 113, Robson, commenced the match with a serve hold to love. In the following game, she won four out of five points to clinch the first breakthrough of the match. A commanding serve hold to 40-15 further enhanced her
lead to 3-0.
She lost just one point in the following game; powering down her rival to another thumping breakthrough that consolidated her position with a stupendous lead of 4-0 upfront. It was a very shocking start for the Italian second seed
who could just win three points from the first four games of the match.
Vinci did well to contain the British 18-year-old starlet with a breakpoint in the fifth game that lowered the trail to 1-4. She was tested in the following game but did well to register the first serve hold of the match. In the
following two games, both players capitalized on their fast serves and bagged games with no pressure at all.
However, the final game for the British booming starlet proved a bit hectic and taxing. She was forced to save three breakpoints on the trot before registering a serve hold. Robson posted an initial lead with this staggering opening
set performance.
Vinci commenced the second set with a serve hold to love. She broke serve in succession to take a lead of 3-1. Robson had returned one breakpoint back in the second game but she couldn’t repeat it in the fourth game; sunk to a
trail of 1-4.
However, the fight from the British teen continued and she was rewarded in the seventh game with a breakpoint that declined the trail to 3-4. She was on the verge of losing a breakpoint in the following game but did well to hang
on. Scores were tied at 4-4.
The Italian second seed failed to save a breakpoint in the 11th game and squandered two chances to break serve in the following game that gifted the match to the Briton.
In the post-match interview, Vinci said, "Next I go to Bastad and then the Olympic Games. The draw will be important. Me, Errani, Pennetta and Schiavone plan to be competitive."
Robson plays fifth seed Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro, in the quarters.
