Laura Robson stuns Venus Williams in the opening round – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2013
British tennis prodigy, Laura Robson, pulled an absolute stunner in the opening round clash of Internazionali BNL d’Italia by overwhelming the former world number one, Venus Williams, on Monday. The 39th ranked teenager
took one hour and 25 minutes to wrap up the contest in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to begin her WTA Premier Mandatory event with impact.
It was the first meeting of these two contestants and Robson took no time in getting under the skin of the American veteran. She spared merely five games for Williams and absolutely dominated her throughout the contest. The 19-year-old
Briton displayed her brilliant serve game to dump Williams in the very first round of the tournament comprehensively.
"I always have trouble with the wind so it was kind of tough in the first set, but then it sort of settled down," Robson said. "The hardest part for me was on my service games, having to wait so long between the first and second
serves because of the wind. But I just got used it, and I got centered. It's hard to play high quality tennis in the wind, but I'm still happy to have won today. I was pretty pumped when I saw the draw. I can remember saying when I was 14 that I wanted to
play Venus, and now I got my wish. It was a tough draw but I was really excited to get out there."
Robson was off the most brilliant start in the opening set and nailed two back-to-back break points to get in the driving seat. She broke the American serve in third and fifth games to race away to 5-1 in no time. Williams couldn’t
do anything to recover from the early damage being done by the Briton and she kept struggling with her shot making. The American veteran managed to register her first break point in the eighth game but Robson broke her in the very next game to claim the opener
at 6-3.
Robson came up with three cracking serve breaks in the following set, while Williams could break the British serve just once. The British teenager eventually wrapped up her triumph at 6-2 to reach the second round of the tournament.
