Laura Robson’s spectacular season – Tennis Special
British diva, Laura Robson, enjoyed her breakthrough season this circuit as she captured a silver medal at the London Olympics and became first British women to reach the final showdown of a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event in 22 years. Spicing her
season further, the Brit climbed to her career best rank at number 53 in the WTA Premier Rankings.
The 18-year-old displayed superb tennis this circuit. After outshining her rivals in her home Olympics event, she gained confidence boost and reached new heights.
Robson’s was bidding for success at the London Olympics from past few years. She bowed out to Maria Sharapova in second round of the singles event. However, the Brit managed to capture a silver medal with Andy Murray in the mixed doubles event. She stated
in a press conference:
“I'm just a massive Olympics person. My main goal for the last few years was just to play in this year's Olympics. I got a silver medal out of that, so hopefully in Rio I can go one better.”
The British teenager says that her loss to Sharapova was the most memorable moment of her life: She recalled:
"They had closed the roof so it was already super-loud inside. I sat down at a change of ends towards the end of the first set and everyone started chanting: 'Laura!' I had goosebumps. I was getting super- emotional because it was the coolest thing ever.
That made the whole year for me."
The gorgeous youngster secured a semi-final berth at the XXV SNAI Open in Palermo before cruising to fourth round at the US Open, last of the four Grand Slam events taking place in New York City. Robson conquered two former Grand Slam champions, Na Li and
Kim Clijsters, en route to pre-quarters at the Flushing Meadows.
The following week, Robson went berserk and breezed past her rival to reach title-round at the Guangzhou International Women’s Open (lost to Su-Wei Hsieh in brutal three sets).
Robson is looking forward to grab a gold medal at the next Olympics in Rio, Brazil. She stated:
"I've already got Rio in the back of my mind."
She is currently enjoying a well deserve off-season and is eyeing to carry her rhythm in the following circuit.
