Laura Vana stuns Kamila Augustyn in Women’s Singles quarter-final at Polish Open 2012
Estonia’s Laura Vana stole the limelight by putting up spectacular show of top quality badminton in Women’s Singles quarter-final when she stunned her higher ranked local opponent Kamila Augustyn at the Polish Open 2012 on Saturday, September 1, in Poland.
The lower ranked Laura, who is the fifth seeded player in the tournament, showed her impressive craft on court and she remained successful in finishing off the winning run of Kamila who was the top seed in the main draw.
The fifth seeded Laura put in everything she had in her possession on court and won the opening set with a dramatic margin. However, she did not face tough opposition in the following set and she emerged as the winner in straight sets by taking just 37 minutes.
In the meanwhile, Kamila did not expect such a threatening play from her rival as she could not build up a reasonable lead at any stage in the whole contest and ultimately bowed down to her lower ranked Estonian challenger without taking any set.
In the first game, both shuttlers found a good start as they played positive and aggressive badminton while remaining quick on court and no one could claim a reasonable lead until the one-minute break at the end of opening half.
After the mid-game interval, they continued putting up impressive show and reached at the nail-biting stage of 20-20.
At this breath-taking stage, both players did not show any sign of giving up and they progressed equally on board until the score reached at 28-28 when Laura played smart badminton and took the set with a dramatic margin of 30-28.
In the second game, Laura got a wonderful confidence as she started to dictate the pace of rallies and she managed a reasonable lead of 11-9 until the break.
After the interval, the in-form Estonian shuttler continued her striking run on court and maintained pressure on her higher ranked Polish rival all the way to finish off the set with a decent margin of 21-18.
The impressive Laura won this quarter-final clash in straight sets in just 37 minutes with a breath-taking 30-28 and 21-18 score on the board.
