Lauren Boyle claims Women’s 800m freestyle gold medal: Day one – 2011 World University Games
Lauren Boyle of New Zealand revealed her splendid efforts to conquer the gold medal of the Women’s 800m freestyle meet on the first day of the 2011 World University Games on Sunday, August 14, in Shenzhen, China.
Boyle showered her expertise in the 800m event, by submitting a top ranked time of 8 minutes and 26.30 seconds. Her efforts were 12.20 seconds slower than the world record of 8 minutes and 14.10 seconds, set by Great Britain’s Rebecca Adlington at the 2008
Beijing Olympics. Nevertheless, she was only 0.71 seconds away from lowering the Game Record of 8 minutes and 25.59 seconds, made by Flavia Rigamonti of Switzerland in 2007.
The gold medallist was chased by Haley Anderson of USA, who remained 0.81 seconds slower than Boyle and reported a second fastest time of 8 minutes and 27.11 seconds for silver medal. Melania Felicitas Costa Schmid of Spain occupied third fastest spot of
the event, by clocking a time of 8 minutes and 33.66 seconds.
Moments later, Martina De Memme of Italy emerged as the fourth best swimmer of the 800m freestyle swim, as she touched the finishing wall to post a time of 8 minutes and 37.05 seconds. De Memme was in a lead of 1.21 seconds over her following swimmer, Megan
Gilchrist of Germany, who ended her race in a time of 8 minutes and 38.26 seconds.
In the meantime, Meredith Budner of Israel claimed sixth position of the event, as she remained 3.25 seconds behind Gilchrist and produced a time of 8 minutes and 41.55 seconds. Likewise, Alice Nesti of Italy remained 2.18 seconds behind her former finisher
and earned the seventh fastest rank of the swim, with a timing of 8 minutes and 43.73 seconds. She was followed by Samantha Vanden Berge of USA, who finished her swim in 8 minutes and 46.70 seconds for eighth position.
Boyle was delighted with her title claiming effort in the respective meet, while the winners were rewarded awards and accolades for their commendable efforts after the session’s completion.
