Lauren Boyle improves the 400m freestyle record at the 2011 New Zealand Swimming Championship
Lauren Boyle, the 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, improves the national record for the 400m freestyle at the 2011 State Insurance New Zealand Swimming Championships in Auckland on Sunday. Her record breaking performance has entered her into the
New Zealand swimming team to compete at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships in July.
Boyle, who made the record for the 400m freestyle last year at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, lowered her own time by a considerable margin of two seconds. She won the gold medal by touching the wall first in a time of 4:07.61 minutes and joined her
fellow team members of the Commonwealth Games including Glenn Synders and Natalie Wiegersma in the New Zealand team.
The champion swimmer was extremely delighted of her victory and said, "I came here not really knowing what to expect. I was really pleased with my time and the swim in the heats to go 4:12, I knew that I had a good time in me."
On the other side, Wiegersma won the gold medal in the 200m individual medley in a time of 2:15.02 minutes and was the first one to be selected into the New Zealand swimming team. She claimed that she will improve her swimming and will try to learn from
her mistakes, for her event at the 2011 World Championships.
"I thought it was okay but really it was off the pace. Still, to be off my best and still qualify for the world championships can't be too bad," said Wiegersma.
In the Men’s category, Glenn Synders won the 100m breast-stroke in a time of 1:01.49 minutes to qualify for the World Championships in July. Moreover, his time was just 0.08 seconds under the Fédération Internationale de Natation time qualification standard.
After his victory in the event, Synders said that he is not delighted with his timing, but he accomplished his dream of getting into Shanghai for the World Championships.
The Championship will continue for four days, in order to complete the New Zealand swimming team line-up for China.
