Lauren Church of Greenwich earned gold medal of Girls 100 yard back-stroke at the 2011 High School State Championships in New Haven, Connecticut, on Saturday, November 19.
Church remained inevitably strong for the gold spot throughout the race. Her gruelling efforts coupled with her unimaginably strong strokes played a vital role in placing her on top of the podium for gold medal.
She was the first swimmer to leap in to the water and gained a marginal lead over her competitors in the start. With her smothering efforts, Church completed her first round of the race in a wonderful time of 26.42 seconds.
She was trailed by Theresa Goehring of Mercy, who remained just 2.05 seconds behind and completed her first half in a second fastest time of 28.47 seconds. The third spot of the race was secured by Caroline Orem of Darien, who remained 0.08 seconds behind her former finisher and completed her initial 50 yards with an effort of 28.55 seconds.
In the next round, Church accelerated her efforts and extended her lead to almost 3 seconds, clocking a time of 55.11 seconds for gold medal. Her meticulous effort was 0.33 seconds under the state and open mark of 55.44 seconds, held by Lauren Solernou of Sacred Heart from 2009.
The gold medallist was trailed by Goehring, who stayed 3.10 seconds slower than her preceding swimmer and stepped on the medal rostrum for silver medal by producing a time of 58.21 seconds.
Meanwhile, Orem proved her audacity for the third fastest spot of the race. She remained only 0.17 seconds away from overwhelming the efforts of silver medallist and hit the wall with a timing of 58.38 seconds for bronze medal.
The fourth finest spot was occupied by Stephanie Moriarty of Wilton, who was 0.39 seconds away from third position holder and concluded her race in a time of 58.77 seconds.
Subsequently, Moriarty out-touched Adelyn Graf of New Canaan with a difference of 0.01 seconds as Graf ended his race in a time of 58.78 seconds.
