Lauren Davis crushes Caroline Garcia in qualifiers – Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012
In an all-teenager clash, America’s Lauren Davis trashed the local contender, Caroline Garcia, with a breadstick at the Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012 on Sunday. She jolted down a 6-2, 6-1 success against the French to breeze into the final round of the
qualifying competition at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament taking place in Strasbourg.
Davis got the better of the French after cashing in six out of 11 break chances in front of a pessimist crowd. After earning the fame in less than an hour, the American charged into the final qualifying round at this clay court event.
The 18-year-old American enthusiastically entered the French clay courts and despite losing her serve once, she carved out the victory with a 6-2 score line after converting three out of four break chances to her advantage. Davis produced a lower first serve
share of 71 per cent as compared to her opponent’s 79 per cent but acceptably clicked 10 out of 17 points on it.
Ranked 169th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Davis improved the level of her game in the follow-up set. She dominated throughout the match and broke Gracia’s entire serves. The American lost her serve once but cashed in three out of seven break chances
to pull out the set with a breadstick.
Up next for the beaming American teenager is the third seed, Mandy Minella of Luxembourg. She rallied past the Austrian veteran, Tina Schiechtl, in a three-set mouth-watering match to set-up this battle. The world number 84 dusted away five out of 12 breakpoints
she came across but capitalised on 10 out of 18 break chances to formulate a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 success in almost two and a half hour.
The top seed qualifier, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, failed to defend the lone breakpoint she encountered. However she cashed in four out of 11 break opportunities to not only pocket the match but to accompany the American in the final qualifying round.
The Spaniard also clobbered a better first serve share of 67 per cent as compared to her rival’s 59 per cent and impressively clicked 28 out of 38 points on it.
