Lauren Davis crushes Yanina Wickmayer to reach the last eight – Bell Challenge 2012
World number 129, USA’s Lauren Davis made the biggest surprise of the event so far, as she humiliated the second seed, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, in the second round of the Bell Challenge in Quebec City, Canada on Wednesday.
The American player completely dominated the contest from its beginning to finish, allowing Wickmayer to win just two games and grabbing it in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Davis made her intentions clear from the start of the contest, as she captured first three games to race to a 3-0 lead. Wickmayer won her serve in the fourth to open her account but she failed to close the deficit, losing three
in a row to throw it away 1-6.
The American contender fired a couple of aces and 74 percent of the first deliveries, sealing 15 of the 20 points on them in the opening set. The 5ft 2in tall player made the most of her opponent’s weak first serves, as she pocketed
nine of the 12.
Davis struck in the opening game of the second set to go up 1-0 but Wickmayer hit back immediately to even it out at 1-1. Nothing could stop the American participant afterwards, as she clinched five on the trot to seal it 6-1.
The 18-year-old could not match her first set’s solid serve performance this time but she still kept the number at a good level. The Florida, USA resident inflicted most damage with the help of her aggressive returns, bagging nine
of the 15 first and seven of the eight second reply points in the second set.
Davis required an hour and three minutes to clinch this one sided victory over her rival.
The American contestant said after the match, "I just went out there the same way I go out every match - intense and focused, no matter who the player is. I stayed focused and played my game and I'm really happy I was able to play
so well against Yanina today."
About her style of play, she added, "She has a big forehand and backhand, and a big serve too - but a lot of girls don't like the heavy spin I have, so I tried to mix that in a bit too."
Davis went on to say that, "I'm very happy to be in my first WTA quarterfinal but I'm just trying to keep myself grounded. My goal is just to keep improving every single day."
The American participant will face the eighth seed, Lucie Hradecka, or Eugenie Bouchard in the quarter-finals.
