Lauren Rettie and Nic Groenewald dominate swimming events – Australian State Teams Championships
Lauren Rettie of Queensland and Nic Groenewald of Victoria impressed the arena in the preliminary rounds of the 50m back-stroke swims in their appropriate age groups. The event took place in the first session of 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course
Championships on September 17, at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra.
Rettie touched the wall in a fastest time of 29.07 seconds to acquire fastest qualification spot of the back-stroke sprint in 13-14 years old Girls category. She was followed by Sophie Taylor of New South Wales, who remained only 0.31 seconds slower than
her and ended her swim in a second finest time of 29.38 seconds. Taylor was just 0.01 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Lucy Soden of Victoria, as she occupied third position of the event with a timing of 29.39 seconds.
Soden managed a lead of 0.14 seconds over her subsequent competitor and team-member, Stan Whittaker, who posted a time of 29.53 seconds for fourth fastest spot.
In the meantime, 14-year-old Groenewald occupied the fastest qualification spot of the event in the Boys 14-15 years old category. He touched the wall in a fastest time of 25.65 seconds to enter the final. With his wonderful effort, he remained nearly one
second behind Douglas Oliver of Queensland, who posted a time of 26.47 seconds.
Meanwhile, Edward Marks of New South Wales appeared on the finishing wall as he concluded his swim in a third qualification time of 26.74 seconds. He was followed by Luke Staffe and Andrew Walker of Western Australia, as they completed their swims with timings
of 27.01 and 27.32 seconds, respectively.
In the meantime, Adelaide Hart excelled in the equivalent event of Girls 15-16 years old class. Hart qualified into next round of the event by submitting a time of 28.33 seconds. She was trailed by Hayley Baker of Victoria, who remained 0.40 seconds slower
than her and posted a time of 28.73 seconds. She was followed by Zoe Williams of South Australia, who remained just 0.05 seconds slower and submitted a time of 28.78 seconds.
After a while, Cameron McEvoy dominated the equivalent event in 16-17 years old Boys category. He touched the wall in a nice time of 25.19 seconds. He was trailed by Jam Nettle Fold of Victoria and Robert Gerlach of Queensland, who qualified as second and
third fastest swimmers, with timings of 25.51 and 25.80 seconds, respectively.
The session enjoyed the heart-winning efforts of all competitors, while these finalists will race each other in the final rounds of their respective events.
