Lauren Rettie and Nic Groenewald impress in swimming events: 2011 Australian State Age Championships
Lauren Rettie of Queensland and Max Muggeridge of Victoria exceeded in the semi-finals of 50m back-stroke swims in their particular age groups at the 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships. The event concluded on September 18, at the
Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra.
Rettie remained invincible throughout her double lap back-stroke swim and occupied top qualification berth into the final, by clocking a time of 28.86 seconds in the semi-finals. She was 0.35 seconds ahead of her following swimmer, Lucy Soden of Victoria,
who concluded her swim in a second fastest qualification time of 29.21 seconds.
The third spot of the race was obtained by Soden’s team-member, Sian Whittaker, who was just 0.08 seconds away from his associate and ended his swim in a time of 29.29 seconds to enter the final round. The fourth qualification spot of the discipline was
secured by Sophie Taylor of New South Wales, who submitted a time of 29.34 seconds to confirm her spot in the final round.
Next was the same event in Boys 14-15 years old category, where Groenewald overwhelmed the efforts of his following competitors and touched the wall first in a time of 25.77 seconds. He was followed by Edward Marks of New South Wales, who was 0.38 seconds
slower than Groenewald and qualified as the second fastest swimmer into the final, by submitting a time of 26.15 seconds.
Douglas Oliver of Queensland emerged as the third finest swimmer to enter the final round, as he stayed only 0.01 seconds and completed his race in a time of 26.16 seconds. Luke Staffe of Western Australia was the final swimmer to qualify for the final,
as he reported a fourth best effort of 26.51 seconds.
Later on, the arena witnessed the gruelling effort of Adelaide Hart in the 15-16 years old class, where she posted a time of 27.85 seconds to top the qualification table of 50m back-stroke. Hart remained only 0.06 seconds ahead of her subsequent competitor,
Hayley Baker of Victoria, who produced a time of 27.91 seconds. The third spot of the race was secured by Zoe Williams of South Australia, as she completed her back-stroke swim in a time of 28.65 seconds for third qualification.
Similarly, Cameron McEvoy claimed the top qualifying position of the equivalent event in 16-17 years old Boys category. McEvoy posted a time of 25.43 seconds and remained 0.04 seconds ahead of his team-member, Robert Gerlach, who ended with a timing of 25.47
seconds. Victoria’s Jam Nettlefold earned third position of the event, with a timing of 25.55 seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended after the conclusion of all semi-finals, while the winners will race against each other in the final of their respective events.
