Laurie Gonzalez nominated for the AEC Women’s of the Year Award – Volleyball news
Senior libero of University at Albany, Laurie Gonzalez, has been nominated for the America East Conference (AEC) Women of the Year Award.
The native of Carolina, Puerto Rico, Gonzalez has been tabbed among the top-three finalists. In addition to Gonzalez, Viive Rebane of basketball and Lucy Van Dalen of track & field have also entered the grand finale. The America East Conference has shortlisted
these players from a group of twelve America East institutional nominations, which were disclosed on May 18.
The prestigious award will go to only one of them on account of the performance throughout the collegiate career. The athletic excellence, academic achievements, leadership, and service to community are the main areas, which will help the jury to distinguish
the top player of the year.
Previously, Ashlee Reed of University at Albany settled for the East Conference (AEC) Women of the Year Award in 2006. However, it has been a long time since any volleyball player claimed the AEC Award. Gonzalez, who is the senior Defensive Expert of UAlbany
women’s volleyball team, is determined to make it to the honourable spot this year.
In the last four seasons, she has performed tremendously well and settled for the America East Conference Volleyball Defensive Specialist without a break. In 2011, she became the only player in history of America East to claim the defensive specialist of
the year title for four consecutive years. After the 2011 season, she settled for the All-Region and Honourable Mention All-America honours. Besides her athletics skills, she is excellent in academics. She made it to the America East Honour Roll status in
2009 and 2010.
As far as the social work is concerned, Gonzalez is active member who has served her community on a regular basis. She has expertise in sexual health education and has volunteered to shape different programmes.
Moreover, she is always willing to take part in other service projects such as breast cancer awareness walks, Relay for Life, and Habitat for Humanity. She has been in the shoes of team captain for three years as well.
