Laurie McNamara of Rice University settles for Side-Out Foundation honours – Volleyball news
The Coppell, Texas native Rice University volleyball student-athlete Laurie McNamara has recently received two Side-Out Ambassador Programme (SOAP) Awards.
She was a member of SOAP and showed remarkable commitment to her school, community and to the eventual goal of providing help to breast cancer patients and their families. The Side-Out Foundation, which works toward the betterment of breast cancer patients,
has three different types of awards, while McNamara seized two of them.
She emerged as one of seven athletes, who received SOAP Scholarship Award. Moreover, she also received SOAP Community Service Awards alongside seven other student athletes from different schools.
McNamara graduated from Coppell High School in 2008. She was an active member of Coppell High School Volleyball Programme and contributed a lot to the overall success of her team. Later on, she joined Villanova University and became part of the Wildcats
as a freshman outside hitter. She moved to Rice University in 2009 but did not compete in the 2009 season.
Nonetheless, she proved her endeavours as sophomore outside hitter in 2010 and led the team to great many achievements. She is now considered as one of the experienced players of Rice Owls and has a great character in the team.
Last year, she actively participated in the Dig Pink campaign of Out-Side Foundation and helped the organisation to achieve its targets. Furthermore, she is always in front row to take part in community welfare campaigns and totally deserved to be named
for SOAP awards.
Speaking of McNamara, the head coach of Rice Owls Genny Volpe said, “Laurie is one of those special individuals that are driven to be a well-rounded person. She impacts the team in many ways by organizing several community service events and she spends a
lot of her down time in the community. I am really proud of Laurie because she embodies what a scholar-athlete is at Rice, someone that is driven to be their best on the court, in the classroom, and in the community and she represents Rice in each of those
aspects.”
