Law And Order:Criminal Intent?

Question

The main characters (the guy and the blond girl), what is their job title? Are they FBI Detectives? or are they crime scene investigators/examiners? I want to Major in this but i'd like to know what the exact titles are (bc they seem to do more than one job..) so I can scoop up some information before I start college. Thanks!

In real life the characters would be considered homicide detectives by law enforcement officials.  If you want to become a homicide detective, I would suggest majoring in psychology with a minor in criminal justice.

They are New York City Police Department Detectives. The NYPD has 3 grades of Detective.

Det. grade 1 - this is the highest  grade

Det. grade 2 - is in the middle

Det. grade 3 - is the lowest grade there is

When you make detective in NYC, it's as a Det. 3 and you work your way up.
