Question:

Law Enforcement Career?

I have given a lot of consideration about getting a degree in criminal justice so that I can pursue a career in law enforcement. The only downside that I have is that I keep getting responses from other users that I shouldn't become a police officer because its too dangerous and risky. Also, I feel that my height and body size is an issue when it comes to the academy and outside of that. I am 5'5'' and about 180lbs. I do have an athletic-muscular body, but I don't have huge arms or anything like that.I am physical and quick, but semi out of shape.I know that I have considerable passion when it comes to seeing police patrolling roads or some sitting and radaring other cars.I do not have a problem with doing that kind of work all my life.I'd rather do that then do the action work of crime.I'd rather just give tickets, run license plate numbers for warrants or anything that may be suspicious. My fiancee says I should go for it because she sees the passion in my eyes. Can I get through this?

  1. If its something you have a passion in, then go for it.  I know some police academies have meetings for those who are interested.  When I checked into it, I would have to buy my uniform and my weapon.  There is also a physical involved and you will have to pass their orientation and training.

Check into the local academy and see what their requirements are, it can't hurt.  Good Luck!

  2. yes it shouldnt madder how heavy u are. if its ur dream job and want to pull ppl over go for it.

  3. Well what I would suggest is just to become a highway patrol man.  The ones who sit and watch cars pass by.  I mean any police work is going to be dangerous at one point or another.  I am in college for my associates in criminal justice but I am not going to become a police officer I am going to become a correctional counselor.

  4. I think that if u really want it u should work out and get stronger because apperance is importsnt..trust me. but i think u really can do it. i belive in u

  5. You don't seem to be ready to make the commitment it takes to be a police officer. You haven't even started the job and you're already saying that you don't want to do everything that cops have to do. Traffic stops can be the most unpredictable and dangerous part of the job. That's where most officers are killed. I wish you the best of luck but your hesitation makes me think that this is not the line of work for you. Hesitation will get you DEAD.

  6. If you just want to work traffic and give cites, then law enforcement is most definetly NOT for you!!!

There is no mental stimulation in just doing repetitive things. And by the sound of it you are not wanting to get into being a LEO for the right reasons. I can guarantee you that on your first interview when you are asked the question  "why do you want to become an officer" and you gave that answer you'd be culled so quick it would make your head spin.

  7. i can tell your right now, don't go into the academy to write tickets. danger is part of being a cop. nearly every cop starts out on the street and you don't get to choose which calls you get. you respond if you're closest.

if you have any fear, you won't be any good to the force. it endangers all those around you to hesitate.
