Im 17 years old and Im taking my GED test in a few weeks. First, I was looking to enlist in the Marines but I also have tourettes syndrome (which isn't bad, but still a problem for them) so I couldn't get in. I was also looking into becoming a police officer. I know all the things that need to be done, e.g. physical test, psychological test, polygraph, etc.

I know you can enlist in the military when your 17 (w/ parental consent, which I had) anyway I was wondering what I can do right now to become a police officer. Is there any kind of training that would help to get a job? anything at all that would help me later on to get a job in law enforcement? I was going to go to the police academy but I think you have to be 18 and then 19 when you can get a actual job as a cop. Anyway what can I do now? any tips? advice?? thanks....

  1. join a police explorer program. Then start taking college classes in public relation or criminal Justice. Forensic science is a big big plus. Try the army or national guard you might get a waiver. Otherwise  police agencies wont look at your application highly with a GED but a college degree or at least 2 years or military experience in military l.e. will kind of overshadow your ged and give you an edge.

  2. That's right. Take some college course. It can just be the usual first year stuff. English will help you all around. Just get some hours that will show that you've moved beyond whatever was the reason for GED rather than graduation. Tourette's won't automatically disqualify you, but you do have to function in a way consistent with all duties. I mean, a tic, for instance, might or might not affect your combat ability. As with any employer, police agencies must make reasonable accommodations under ADA, but they don't have to compromise safety. If you think you can't be accommodated as an officer, consider dispatch. Corrections also offers positions in which accommodation is easier.
