This is a question relating to Law in England.
If Person A gives Person B an item without conditions or contract, it becomes theirs to do with as they please, including to give it to a third person if they wish... so far so good. But what happens if Person B wants the item back and claims it was not given to person A but was merely a loan, although B cannot prove it was a loan and A cannot prove it was an unconditional gift?
Would it be the case that as A is now in possession of the item and there is no evidence to suggest that he knew the item was only on loan, B wouldn't have much chance of winning a court case over the matter? And would the Police pursue the problem or would they say that there is no proof so they can't help B recover his item?
