It depends what country you live in, In the UK it is illegal to keep them as pets unless you have a license and then they are only issued to place such as zoo's, and specialist wild life centres. As for the US I'm not sure of the rules but I'm pretty sure that in most states your still not allowed to keep them.

    A meekat may look like a great pet but they are social and need to be kept in large groups for their own well being so its not really advisable to keep them anyway and also if you were to keep one as a pet it would be extremely difficult to find a vet that knows how to treat such animals in an emergency.

    Have you considered keeping ferrets instead, they have similar mannerisms and are much easier to care for and easier to obtain.
