  1. all i know of is the university of west indies in kingston. you can study law there but whether or not its based on an american legal system, i wouldnt know, but i doubt it.

  2. No, there is no "American" law school in Jamaica.

In Jamaica the main institution to begin your legal studies is the Faculty of Law at the University of the West Indies. UWI offers the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) -- an academic qualification which is a compulsory prerequisite to professional legal training for lawyers in the Commonwealth Caribbean.

    See  http://www.mona.uwi.edu/law/

There are, however, other distance learning law programs offered by some British institutions.

After completing your Bachelor of Laws (LLB) there, you may choose to sit the Bar Exam in whatever country you plan to practice. The Norman Manley Law School is one of three regional law schools which prepares students for admission to practice in the Commonwealth Caribbean territories.

    See  http://www.nmls.edu.jm/

While Jamaica and America are both common law legal systems, obviously there are some fundamental differences between the two.

For example, the cases that will be cited as authority in the US are US cases, whilst in Jamaica, English cases and cases from the wider Commonwealth are either binding or persuasive authority. Additionally, differences in the court system, Constitution and statutes of each country mean it will be harder for you to adapt to the American legal system should you study in Jamaica.

The LLB and JD (Juris Doctor degree required in the USA) are quite similar, with a few differences. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juris_Docto...

But it is possible to study in Jamaica and be admitted to the Bar in a US state.

My best advice is to contact the Faculty of Law at UWI or the Norman Manley Law School for additional details.

Hope that helped, and all the best ~*

  3. For all practical purposes, you aren't going to find a school in Jamaica that teaches American Law. There may be a few scamster certificate courses if you search real hard, but not accedited programs. It just would not be economical.

  4. Just making a correction, the Norman law school at UWI is the only law school in Jamaica, not "Edna Manley" as the person above me said. And i also want to do law but unfortunately, there is no American law school that exists here in Jamaica because as someone said earlier we do English law a which is totally different from American law thus if you study one, you cant practice the other. So graduates from an American law school in Jamaica wouldn't be able to actually practice in Jamaica, there are exceptions that ive heard of ....

  5. No. Jamaica's law is based on English law and the only law school on the Island is the University of the West Indies Norman Manley School of law.  If you attend law school in Jamaica you cannot import that degree to the US.
