I have heard there is an actual law stating that you must carry $20 in your pocket at all times - does anyone know where I can find more information of this law? For example - what is the act/law called and when was it introduced etc. etc.

  1. I'm 60 years old and I've never heard it was a law. But it's not a bad idea to have something in case of emergency. There might be someplace where you can't use your credit or debit card. That little suggestion came into being before credit and debit cards were even thought of.

  2. Limited research shows no such law...

However several places, the fine for vagrancy is or was 20.00

  3. There may be such a law somewhere in the world, but there is no such ggeneral law in the United States, in my state or in any state I have ever lived in.  If you want to know if there is in your area, you can check the city ordinances at city hall and you can check the state laws at the law library at your county court  house.  BTW, many places once had laws prohibiting vagrancy, and some of those had an evidence rule that somene who didn't have any money was presumed to be a vagrant.  Most of those local laws have been repealed (because the u.s. supreme court held that they were unconstitutional in Papichristou v. Jacksonville).  Some may still be on the books but unenforced.  I believe what you have here approaches an urban myth -- a common misconception about the law.

  4. Not in Australia I jog with police officers and we only carry a canceled driving licence that holds our current address and my front door key and a handkerchief and you can only be arrested if you have or about to commit a criminal act

when i was in the military i was only required to carry my military id at all times

the USA has some law about Vagrants

  5. You are obviously American, as such a dumb question could not possibly come from anyone else.

  6. if this was a law, Id be locked up every second week lol

  7. This law probably does not exist in all jurisdictions and may have been repealed in many. Do a search on vagrancy laws and you should find what you are looking for though.

  8. Used to be the vagrancy law.

  9. I suspect you will find this "law" to be an urban ledgend. If it does exist you will find it at www.comlaw.gov.au

  10. If that's the case, millions are breaking the law because most adults rarely carry cash, they use a debit card.

  11. I wish that there is a well I can go to and fill my pocket with cash. Must be a socialistic dream.

  12. I believe you may be looking at vagrancy law; check with the county atty's office as that law doesn't exist in many places anymore
