i have craftsmen lawn mower.. standard lawn mowing tractor.. never really any adjustments too it. i cleaned out carb. and re adjusted spark plugs and changed the oil several times too flush out junk oil until i bought GTX 10w-30 oil.. i put 2 qts. of oil in.. started it up ran alot better then white smoke started appearing and soon after start up about 30 seconds... i shut it off, and it back fired. gave it 5 minutes. and started it up.. again and white smoke was immediate..

i think 2 qts was too much maybe... smelt like burning oil. possiblity oil is going into exhaust or muffler? suggests and cause would be great.

i think tomorrow i might drian a half qt out. and see and let it run.

thanks

  1. Too much oil. They take about a guart and a half. My Craftsman did the same. TO THE MORONS WHO GAVE ME A THUMBS DOWN. You need to read up on Sears Mowers, or get a friggin life.

  2. If it is white smoke . it is not burning oil. You have your carburetor out of adjustment.

  3. As you said, you prolly over-filled it, but why would you just dump so much oil in without knowing how much you are supposed to use?

Anyway, I thought oil burned black smoke, so I'd be concerned...

  4. You are probably just burning oil, which I think you put too much. It does burn white smoke. With it back firing that is a sign of a dirty carburetor. The motor is probably one of these and I would check to see what the specs are:

    www.tecumsehpower.com/

  5. What size engine (hp) is the engine on your machine? You call it a tractor. Is it a riding mowing machine. Surely it has a dipstick to indicate what the proper oil level in the pan should be. Maybe you DID overfill the crankcase and oil is spashing up into the cylinders. The white smoking would indicate such.

  6. You put in too much oil.  Use the dipstick and don't go above the full mark.  About a quart and a half for starters.  Now, check the air filter.  If the paper filter is soaked with oil you will need to replace it.

  7. Oil burns white, Almost would guarantee you overfilled it.check the dipstick and drain it accordingly. You will want to at least change your spark plug too, at the very least clean it. After that you should be good to go.
