Lawn Tennis Association reveals its funding list for 2013 – Tennis News
Great Britain’s Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has announced the list of players, who will be funded through the Team Aegon programme in 2013.
LTA runs this programme every year to help the most talented and skilled tennis players of Great Britain, the ones who have a scope to do well in the future. 21 players have been chosen this time, which are two less than those for 2012.
The Association provides funds to the players for getting training at best facilities in Great Britain and abroad. Players are also provided sponsorship to travel throughout the world for participating in international events. In addition to that, psychological,
medical, nutritional and physical help is also provided through this initiative.
This year’s Wimbledon doubles champion, Jonathan Marray, has been also included in the Team Aegon for next season. Marray provided joy to the British nation, as he partnered with Denmark’s Frederik Nielsen to stun almost all of the top doubles team in the
world to capture doubles title at the All England Club.
The Brit and Dane qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals with the help of that effort and continued their good run to advance to the semi-finals there.
LTA’s Head of Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Leon Smith, stated that LTA would try its best to provide support to its talented players in the best possible manner.
Smith said, “We recognise that whether a player succeeds is ultimately down to them, but we are committed to identifying and supporting these talented athletes, in order to help them to maximise their potential, and inspire more people to play and follow
tennis.”
Johanna Konta and Liam Broady are two more of the few already famous players in that list. Konta, who recently switched her national from Australian to British, is the fourth highest ranked player from Great Britain. On the other hand, Broady is a promising
junior player, who reached the title match of US Open this year.
Head of Sponsorship at Aegon, Ian Murray, added, “We’re delighted to continue supporting the LTA with the development of the most talented tennis players in the country through Team Aegon and the Aegon Future Stars programmes.”
Dan Evans is the most notable omission from the Team Aegon for next year. The 22-year-old Davis Cup player has not made good progress on the ATP Tour.
However, he would be allowed to avail facilities of LTA such as the National Tennis Centre. The Brit would also be applicable for the Tournament Bonus Scheme in the next season.
