Question:

Lawn experts - The grass seed is growing, but I didn't put down enough...now what?

In areas of the yard where there are huge dirt patches, I threw down grass seed. It is growing, but it is very thinned out (I didn't put enough down?) I would like to throw more seed down...but how do I do this?

I'll need to break up the dirt again, right? How can I do that without hurting the new grass? How tall should I wait for that new grass to get before I make this attempt?

Also, the back yard has clover, which I read was a natural fertilizer anyway...but it really helps fill out the yard. I didn't see any at the stores, but is it possible to buy clover seed somewhere to help fill out the front lawn?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Just lightly "scratch" the bare spots and you can over-seed the entire area. Spread the seed at the rate suggested by the seed producer and it never hurts to add some "Starter Fertilizer".

Some seed companies produce grass seed with a higher percentage of clover, but as good as it is for the environment, it is considered a "weed" now.

  2. grass spreads naturally once its well rooted. so water the grass you have and after a month or two just pluck out some grass from the place where you have dense thick grass growth and transfer it to areas where you don't have enough grass. also you can find clover seeds or just pluck some clover from your back lawn and plant it in the front yard. it'll spread itself.

  3. Just throw more seeds down...you dont need to loosen it again.  You can buy clover seeds at outsidepride.com

  4. Yes - just throw on more seed, and keep watered.

You can sometimes find clover in "cover crop" seeds.  You'll want the white clover (low growing) rather than red clover, which grows tall.

  5. When the seeds that are new start to sprout, fertilize them lightly with some kind of fertilizer like miracle grow liquid. This will help them get stronger faster. Then when they are tall enough to mow, you mow it just like regular grass. Make sure the mower blade is sharp. After this then you can use a weed killer if there is a weed problem  like 2,4,d or you just over seed. You don't have to do any dirt work that will disturb what is new. Just keep the ground wet!!
