Question:

Lawn in horrible condition?

I need help. My lawn is in bad condition. Weeds are everywhere, dead spots on the lawn, and some places just bare dirt. It's still sorta green, just ridden with weeds. What should I do, I already sprayed the weeds with weed killer, and it seems to be working. But i don't know what to do next. I have fescue btw.

  1. Overseed the lawn with fresh seed. You will need to keep the lawn damp for a few weeks to sprout the seed and keep it alive until it develops a good root system. For that reason, I suggest delaying overseeding until fall when the rains will keep the lawn damp and bring up the seed.

  2. try to thatch the whole lawn or just those areas, renting it or rake them until all dead is gone and dirt is exposed.. over seed those areas heavy ,raking in the seed a little bit then over seed the whole lawn. water daily but not enough to wash away the seed repeat after 21 days if results dont show.. a thick lawn will keep the weeds down because theres not much room to grow, seed and water like crazy it will come around.. dont spray weed killer on your lawn, it could cause permant dirt spots

  3. Consider two things before you try to do anything.

    1.  Have you been watering consistently.

    2. Are you spraying your weeds with weedbgone and other noxious stuff?   QUIT IT.

Oh.  Also check for spiders.    Raking the grass helps aerate the lawn, and it will grow better. The grass cannot grow there because it needs EITHER TURNING OVER, or replaced with a piece of sod with grass in it from another part of the yard.   Putting clover - the purple kind - also helps.   I put two plants in my garden bed about 8 years ago, and now it is all over the yard.

Another problem is that if you use weed killer on the weeds, then birds and bugs will not eat the weeds or the seeds, and you will not have a healthy lawn.     Being organic takes time and patience.    Having a nice lawn does mean work.   Digging up the weeds and putting them in the compost.   If you do not have a compost pile, consider one.   If you have a flower that keeps getting into the lawn, move them into a spot where they can be happy, and not in the lawn.   Remember, the more flowers you have, the more bugs, and the more bugs, the birds will come and just have a Blast.

The weed killer will kill more bugs and more birds, and you will have some trouble working in the lawn, unless you wear gloves to protect yourself.   I say, do not use the weed killer.

Use soap with a mix of olive oil, or veg oil, and spray it with that, and if there are small mites that are causing the problem that should take care of it.     Remember that bugs will go in cycles too.   I sure hope that you understand too, that sometimes just putting new seed on the ground about the time the rains come will help the lawn also.
