K i am a completely new to lawn mowing. I am not a motor guy so when you answer if you can please give me like easy explanations.

So here's problem:

My lawn mower, I was using it one day and it just quit on me.

I put like a whole can of oil(idk how much i am supposed to put)

And fill gas tank to full too.

After lots of tries it started but then phone rang so i had to leave. When I came back, like five minutes later, i spent like a hour trying to start it, it started once but it shut off like in two minutes. So whats wrong with it?

And what do i need to do?

  1. Be sure the gas tank vent on the gas cap is open while operating the engine.

You may have over filled the oil. There should be a dipstick on the oil fill cap. Check the dip stick oil level and bring it to the full mark by removing the oil drain plug at the bottom of the crankcase and draining some of the oil. If the oil level is overfilled the engine will not operate properly because the oil can completely fill the crankcase, not allowing room for the moving parts in the crankcase to turn without considerable resistance. This condition will pump oil into the combustion chamber fouling the engine. You may also have to clean the spark plug. See if a friend or neighbor can help you if further help is needed.

  2. Oh, dear 'new to lawn mower experiencer' --

You have my *TOTAL* symphathies!  Was your new lawn mower purchased at a RELIABLE, RECOMMENDED dealer; which dealer offered to demonstrate to you the proper operation and care for your purchase?  Did you bring the new lawn mower home in 'perfect operating order'?  If so, you should NOT have done anything other than add the proper amount of REGULAR gasoline to the fuel tank -- sufficient to keep the lawn mower running for at least one seasons' of grass cutting.  At the end of that season of grass cutting, you should check the level of the lubricating OIL, and add JUST ENOUGH new lubricating OIL -- IF INDICATED BY THE DIP-STICK TO BE 'LOW' -- to bring the level of oil up to the 'Full' mark on the dip stick.

  3. You're not supposed to put straight up oil or gas..you're supposed to mix it.

  4. i can tell you every thing not to do and this will help solve...but first thing is to solve the quit thing...was it out of gas?...was it out of oil?...oil is your piston ring slide got to have that.it appears you have a gravity oil feed metered into the vacum to mix with gas..or  a pump for the seperate oil fill unit. without the oil it will lock up..stop. was the oil being entered into the system? (empty or container unit not showing oil getting low) ckeck all lines for clogs leaks. can you hand turn the flywheel with the spark plug removed? try adding a small amount of just gas into spark plug hole..install plug medium torque...don't over tighten aluminum threads or helicoils will strip if over tightened..try it..set choke and start...what happens...let us know. you need to start from the begining to solve this..if all else fails purchase the repair manual. it sounds you over choked flooded foul plug see if plug is wet..go from there
