  1. Before you start, check with your parents regarding your health insurance in case you have an accident mowing.  Then ask them if they will pay for any damage you do to a yard with that mower.

As a homeowner, there is no possible way that I'd hire a child to work in my yard.  If you got hurt, your parents would sue.  My workers are licensed, bonded and insured.

  2. Think outside the box my boy... start collecting cans from your neighbors, then recycle them. (best option as people do not actually give you their money, they give you cans, which are worth money) Offer to pull weeds for people.  Wash their cars, walk their dogs.  Sweep their porches and water their outside plants.  The possibilities are endless... rake leaves, wash their dogs.  Clean their roof gutters, (be CAREFUL)  get some cleaner and scrub off the oil spots in their driveway, chop wood and stack it for them.  anything you see at their house that is messy or needs work, offer to do it for them... (for a small price)   soon they will be calling you for all their chores.

Dont be too greedy and ask for too much money for each job... say 5 bucks to mow the lawn, 5 bucks to wash the dog, and 5 bucks to rake the leaves... thats 15 bucks... but do not try to get 15 bucks for EACH job... people will see your greed and not use you.

  3. Make fliers toa dvertise your services, consider placing four per page and cut them up, don't leave the flier inside the mailbox, that is ilegal in most states, charge $20 per 1/4 acre and $25 for heavily ornamented lots (lots of statues etc...), a good idea is to introduce yourself along with your equipment, adults love a hard-working teen and will hire you on the spot (those not home leave a flier), mow around edges first and then fill in, that saves time!, shop around for gas, ask your mom to find the cheapest place and get two 5 gallon containers, buy the gas when it is cool outside, keep your machine clean (less mess, less problems), and most of all BE SAFE! Ask your mom to ride along when you introduce yourself to potential clients, anyone looks funny skip them. Good luck!!!!

  4. It depends on how small their yards are. I would say $15 is a good price. I pay $20 for mine- it's a medium front yard with a small back yard. If www.craigslist.com is available in your area, put an ad in the services listing. Otherwise, ask around your neighborhood, your family, friends of your parents, etc. You could also hang a poster on your mailbox post that says lawnmowing available with your phone number on it. People that hire you that you don't know- have your parents bring you to their houses and wait. There's just too many weirdos these days! Good luck! :-)

  5. you have to remember that the economy is in a slump right now and people don't have the extra cash to spare like they did back in the 90's when they'd be more than willing to pay someone to mow their lawn. Nowadays you will be lucky if even 1/10 people want someone else to do a job they could do themselves. No offense, but like you said, gas is expensive. Working folks have to save every penny.
