Question:

Lawnmower problem?

1 Yr old Lawnmower starts, runs but dies under load of cutting grass. Ran fine last week and didn't hit anything that I know of. Cleaned the fuel tank already and the spark plug but have the above problem still. What's the deal. Briggs & Strat 550 series.

  1. check your air filter and make sure that you're getting fuel, also check your spark plug again even change it,there isn't much to a lawn mower to check

  2. You said you cleaned the fuel tank but did not say you got a new supply of fuel.

Go get new fuel directly from a gas station. Worth a try. Lawn mower engines are very balky with old fuel.

  3. you know the fuel additives you add to your gas tank in your car?  go ahead and add a half bottle of that stuff into your gas can with FRESH fuel and give that a try.

another thing to check is the spark plug WIRE.  if you can, in a dark garage or at night, start the mower and look closely to see if there are sparks jumping around the plug area.  part of the wire may have cracked or gotten a small cut causing an electrical system short.

if your mower has a safety release, engine kill switch or bar, trace the mechanism to the engine.  there you will find a small guage copper wire that MIGHT be loose and just need a slight retightening.

just a couple new ideas worth looking into.

  5. Clean the air filter and check for a plugged fuel filter. Tip it over and see if you have something wrapped around the blade.Choke on? Mower set lower than last week? Clean the plug? Plenty of fuel? The right kind of fuel? Blades sharp enough?

    Good Luck

  6. How long is your lawn?? If it is too long and wet, your mower has to go slowly through the grass to cut it or it will bog down and stall.
