Lawrence Chan Kum Peng says Lee Chong Wei needs mental toughness to win major events
Lawrence Chan Kum Peng, a famous motivational specialist in Malaysia says that the World Number One, Lee Chong Wei needs mental toughness to win major events like World Championships and Olympic Games.
Kum Peng also thinks that the shuttler needs to regroup at this moment, especially when he is morally down and heartbroken after his defeat from the hands of China’s Lin Dan in the Men’s Singles final of the 2011 BWF World Championships, at the Wembley Arena,
in London, last week.
After working extremely hard in training for years, Chong Wei lifted his level to match the speed and skill of Lin Dan but he could not just finish the final point and had to pay the price in the form of the title. He was completely heartbroken after the
defeat and is very down morally at the moment. Kum Peng said that he needs to get mental toughness which will make him confident to perform well in the most crucial time at a major event.
While talking about his meeting with the shuttler, Kum Peng said, “He met me yesterday and I offered to help him in this aspect. It is now up to him.”
He further added, “Most Malaysian sportsmen are mentally strong but still lack the winning edge or mental toughness when it comes to big matches.”
By citing the example of Chong Wei in this regard, Kum Peng said, “Chong Wei was a strong player but that was not good enough because he was not mentally tough compared to his nemesis, Lin Dan of China. That was why, despite the good performance put up by
Chong Wei, he still lost to Lin Dan at the crucial moment. This is what we call lack of mental toughness.”
The motivational specialist insists that Chong Wei must learn the art of mental toughness which will raise his level of play for the 2012 London Olympics, which is less than a year away from now. Now, the only difference left between Chong Wei and Lin Dan
is the mental strength as both are equal in skill and physical condition which is required at the top level of badminton.
