Former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 defender Mark Lawrenson thinks that the Reds are currently in a state of demise, and the way they have handled the matter of the appointment of the new manager has further dented their hopes of putting up a good show in the coming
season.
The 54-year old was critical of the policy adopted by Liverpool’s decision makers in the wake of Kenny Dalglish’s sacking and believed that the top five of Manchester City, Manchester United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have already taken the
lead, by involving themselves effectively in the transfer process.
The Merseyside club are currently searching for a new manager, with reports strongly linking http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 as the hot favourite to take over the uninhabited managerial seat at Anfield.
Even though the Liverpool owners have undertaken a couple of big decisions off late in their bid to improve the state of affairs at the club, Lawrenson felt that the Reds were nowhere near to be in a position to mount a challenge for a top four finish. He
was of the opinion that City, United and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 will further improve in the upcoming season and the best that Liverpool can hope for is to grab the sixth spot.
While talking to reporters, he said: “The club are at a crossroads and I would argue they are even further off finishing in the top four now than they were at the start of last season.”
“If anything, they are going backwards, not forwards.”
The former Irish International also highlighted the fact that Liverpool will have a busy schedule next season, as they will also be competing in the Europa League. Hence, he felt that it was pertinent on the part of the club to add further depth to the squad
and opined that with no manager at the helm, the Reds are running out of the opportunity to sign quality players before their Premier League rivals.
He continued, “We have a situation where there is no-one at the club to sign players. There's no manager and Damien Comolli, who handled transfer negotiations, has still not been replaced.”
Lawrenson also lashed out at the owners on their premature decision to axe the former manager Dalglish, and pointed out that their search for a new boss at Anfield should have started before relieving the Scott of his duties.
He added, “They must have had misgivings about Kenny Dalglish for some weeks before they sacked him and yet they didn't line up a replacement.”
The Irishman also fulminated against the club’s policy of making public the list of the potential candidates for the management http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 and indicated that they should have adopted a more clandestine approach.
