Lawrie Herman overpowers Scott Tsang in Boy’s Singles U-18 quarter-final of Tertutup Remaja Sabah
Malaysia’s talented young shuttler, Lawrie Herman, has made his presence felt as he has reserved his berth in the semi-final after defeating Scott Tsang in quarter-final showdown of Tertutup Remaja Sabah 2012, on Sunday, January 1, in Malaysia.
Herman played to his maximum potential and remained successful in beating his higher ranked opponent in a crunchy fight. He took 65 minutes to chuck out his challenger in an entertaining rubber-set contest. Tsang remained unlucky as he lost the final set
with a narrow margin.
The match started in a fast way as Herman employed powerful smashes in the opening rallies and remained successful in setting up an early lead. His aggressive approach pushed his opponent on a defensive position throughout the first set.
Tsang tried to play with variations but his rival was quicker in returning the bird from all areas of the court. Herman played positive badminton in the first game and won it with a terrific margin of 21-13.
In the following set, Tsang played a completely different game as he also started to execute powerful smashes in all areas of his rival’s court. The score was tight in the whole set as no one could establish his supremacy in the game.
However, at the ending points, it was Herman who failed to live up to the expectations as he played wrong shots and lost the set with a tight score of 19-21.
The deciding game was identical to the previous set as both boys played at their best speed and kept the pace of rallies at the highest level. The score again progressed equally as no one could build a reasonable gap.
Until the concluding phase of the deciding game, the score was equal as both shuttlers played positive badminton. However, Tsang remained unlucky as he made an unforced error at this crucial stage which helped Herman to take the final set with a close margin
of 21-19.
The overall score of this 65-minute fight was 21-13, 19-21 and 21-19.
In the semi-final showdown, Herman will face Mohd Rahmat Amirul, who won his quarter-final contest against the second seed, Roysten Habirin.
