Hi,

I have a full drivers licence for a car? Can i drive a Moped/Mo-Bike?

Would i need to do a course before i can drive one?

Also my other half is now getting a provisional drivers licence, what does he need to do in order to be able to drive a 125cc?

Thanks

Cat

  1. You must have a provisional licence and has passed a CBT (compulsory basic training ) course before you can ride on the road on your own.

    16 to ride a 50cc moped.  17 or over to ride a 125cc.

If you are 21 you can  take CBT and then take your full test on a 400cc which will give you any size of bike licence.

  2. you can ride a 50cc scooter only after taking the very easy CBT

the other half the same but for a 125 you need to be over 17

    EDIT

a full car licence DOES entitle you to ride a moped....

  3. www.dvla.gov.uk

  4. In the UK...

If you passed your car test before 1 February 2001 then you can ride a moped (50cc restricted to 30mph) without doing a CBT (although it is recommended). Check if you have category P entitlement on your driving licence.

If you passed your car test on or after 1 February 2001 then you must first complete a CBT course and obtain a DL196 certificate to validate your P entitlement.

If you have the P entitlement on your licence you can carry a passenger and you don't need L plates. 50cc bikes are not allowed on motorway.

If you (or your other half) want to ride anything between 50cc-125cc then you will need to take a CBT, display L plates, not carry a passenger or ride on motorway. If you don't take your bike theory and practical tests within 2 years of obtaining your CBT, you will need to take another CBT - you will need to take a CBT every 2 years until you pass your bike test (if you choose to). This also applies to your other half if they want to ride anything up to 125cc (including 50 cc as he/she doesn't have a full car licence).

You cannot ride anything over 125cc without first getting a full bike licence.

    Hope this helps ;)

  5. Your driver's license wouldn't entitle you to drive a moped...you would have to do a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) first. This takes place all in the one day and is aimed at proving your compitence on a bike.  You start off at the test centre, doing things like going round cones etc to show you have control of the bike, and if you get through that part they take you out on the road to make sure you have road-sense.  If successful, you are awarded your CBT and are entitled to drive any bike/moped up to 125cc.  If you wanted to ride a bike with a bigger engine you would have to sit your test.  I think the CBT is valid for two years, but expires after that to encourage you to sit your 'big' test (but check that because I know they made some changes to motorbike testing recently).

As for your other half, he/she would just have to do the CBT, same as you.  Why not book in for your CBTs on the same day and do them together?

    Good luck!

  6. Depends where you live Cat, im in N Ireland and you dont need to do CBT test here.
