does anyone know of any laws protecting childen after a natural disaster? the school district here is trying to close an elementary school after a flood and our children of this school are to be scattered all over the city. The district has not given any good reason to close down the school other than well it could be flooded again, or modular classrooms aren't good enough, and the superintendent says he is "doing what's best for the children". These kids lost their homes and now have lost their school. We had FEMA trailers but the district sent them back. We do not fall under the McKinney Act and the governor's office is looking for a law that we do fall under. we are trying to write everyone we can think of so the district will not shut the school down as it held many great teachers and kids as well as numerous resources for low income families. anyone have any good ideas to help out there? Thanks!

  1. Unfortunately, if these other schools fall under your city's/town's border, then the school district can close the school and send the students to these other schools.  Now, the govenor could step it and want proper documentation to prove the reasoning to the closing.  If their are no more elementary schools within the school district; then they can only close it temporarily.  As long as a new school is being built.  I have alot of experience with my children after Hurrican Charley hit SW Florida.  You can always write to your state congressman.
