Lay-day called at TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival due to strong on-shore winds
A lay-day has been called for the TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival featuring the Dow AgroSciences Pro due to a forecast of strong onshore winds.
The third of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series ran consecutively at Fitzroy Beach in Taranaki, New Zealand, for the first two days, offering high-performance waves to the best female surfers from
around the globe as they chased the coveted ASP Women’s World Title.
The unfavourable winds that were headed towards the primary event site on Friday compelled the event organisers to put the event on hold, looking to run the competition in good surfing conditions, which are expected to prevail at Fitzroy Beach on Saturday
according to the forecast.
TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival Director Craig Williamson expressed his excitement over Saturday’s forecast. After getting treated to a heavy dose of thrilling action during the first-two days of the competition, Williamson was anxious to witness the elite female
surfers in action once again.
“We’re having a day off competition today,” Williamson said. “There are some waves out there at the moment, but the winds are expected to get quite strong onshore later in the day. Then we have bigger swell and more favourable winds forecasted for tomorrow.
We’re excited to see what will happen with the remaining heats in the event. Yesterday was one of the best days of competition we’ve ever seen at this event. It’s great to see the women pushing the sport to new heights.”
The large competition field had been trimmed during the initial rounds of the event to leave only the in-form surfers in contention for the event title. The previous day of the competition had already sent six surfers into the Quarter-finals, which included
four surfers who had clinched top honours in their Round 3 heats while two surfers who had managed to prevail in their respective Round 4 heats.
When the competition resumes tomorrow, the battle for the Quarter-finals’ spot will continue as Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons, 2011 ASP Women’s World Runner-Up, will take on her compatriot Rebecca Woods in the third heat of Round 4, while America’s Courtney
Conlogue will go head-to-head with Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich in the fourth heat.
