  1. i had the same problem. my coach said to let my head gently roll back and not tense my neck muscles so much. it changed the entire look of the spin and suprisingly it made me spin faster.

  2. A few tips:

    1. Keep the skating leg straight.  The laying back comes from the hinge of the hips pushing forward and not bending the knee you are spinning on.

    2.  Center. Center. Center.  If you are not centered, there's very little balance and there will be no safe way to lay back.  Fixing the spin will make the position easier.

    3. Chin up.  Layback positions tend to look scrunched because as we lay back, we want to keep our head looking straight.  Lot's of people like to think that you need to drop your head at this point which seems totally scary.  A better mental image is to lift your chin to the ceiling.

  3. I know what thats like! My layback got awsome by doing some core exercises. I also pulled my head back a little bit every five spins I did. I worked for forty five minutes on it and it rocks now! You could go onto http://www.rainbosports.com/shop/site/pr...   and get a spinner to practice off ice on. The spinner gives you the feeling that your spinning. Good Luck With Your Layback!!!!

  4. Do an off ice... Try bridge and hold it for 1-5 minutes then do it again... Then try do the feet (off ice) and hold it high for about 1-5 minutes... Then after doing it for times do it on ice...

    ~Good luck~

  5. The best tip I got for laybacks is to push my hips out.  Your hips help to balance you out as you lay back.  Practice this by pushing your hips up against the wall and bending back as far as you can.  You'll feel your hip bones against the wall.  This helps you feel centered and balanced as you push yourself to arch more in the spin.  Also try to go straight back.  Some skaters favor one side and look lop-sided in their laybacks.  If you're doing a traditional layback position, be sure your free leg position is correct -- there are many variations to laybacks these days, but nothing tops a perfect textbook layback...they can be so pretty.  Keep your free leg out, not with the knee down and free foot turned out.  Good luck!  :)

  6. I had the same problem. What you have to think when you're spinning, is to push your hips forward, not just bend your back. Your back should actually be pretty straight, but it's the hips/waist that is making you "layback". Look at pictures of good layback positions, and you'll notice how it's not their back that's bent, its their hips that are pushed forward. I mean, their back is still bent a little, but its mostly the hips that are making the "layback"
