I would like to do this by laying a bed of concrete (?1 inch deep) on an existing bed of concrete and setting broken floor tiles in it. Is there any advice you can offer me - I have a cement mixer but people keep telling me I will not be able to do this on my own.

  1. if your existing concrete is sound you only need to lay the tiles on a bed of mortar (4:1). it is easily possible to do this on your own. get your preparation right & you will breeze through it, good luck.

  2. You can do this on your own.Best stick the tiles straight onto old cement. If you do make a 1 inch levelling cement base than you MUST mix in a PVA solution. This is a type of ultra strong glue that will make sure the 1 inch sticks very firmly to the old cement. Also PVA must be used in the cement mix when sticking down the broken tiles as they will come loose with just cement.B&Q sell PVA for about a fiver.Do not use concrete but mortar (building sand and cement)mix. If you do the 1 inch base then do it quite runny,as the mix will float to the dips naturally and get levell.
