Im building a patio.

Im going to use broken bricks then crushed stone as hardcore, but what sort depths do i need. the surface now is compacted soil.

Then what do I do? A layer of sharp sand? And what sort of thickness of morter?

Any advice would be welcome, thanks.

  2. Make sure the bodies are covered with lime, otherwise the dog will try and dig them up.

  3. if the soil is already compact you wont need broken brick and hardcore, just hire a wacker plate and wack the soil then a bed of sand about 2 inch deep then wack this then set up some levels with round pipe or simular to a length of copper pipes and run a straight edge between the two pieces screeding the sand and keeping it level as you do then lay your slabs on top and grout between them, this will be ok if the patio is only for people walking on it not for heavy weights like cars etc.

  4. yes a layer of sharp sand compact as much as possible so its around an inch or so thick. dab a blob of mortar in each corner of the slab and one in the middle, make the dabs enough to squash down to about and inch, gently hit them as you lay them with a rubber mallet. mark out your area and get it all square before you start and use a spirit level to check that you aren't running off level. use a string line to keep your run straight. and good luck.

  5. Look up Wickes' site, they explain all the building projects on there.
