Laynce Nix shines as Washington Nationals defeat Seattle Mariners 1-0 – MLB Update
Washington Nationals’ left-fielder, Laynce Nix had a remarkable day with the bat as he played superbly to score a single run of the game and gave the Nationals a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Nationals Park, Washington on June 23.
With this important victory, the Nationals were able to sweep the Mariners 3-0 in a three-game series.
It was the pitchers day as they were on top from the first to eighth inning of the game. The Mariners’ right-fielder, Ichiro Suzuki was grounded out to second base and Dustin Ackley grounded out towards third base at the top of the first inning.
Similarly, the Nationals’ batters also got out with continuous intervals as Danny Espinosa was struck-out swinging and Ivan Rodriguez lined out to first base at the bottom of the second inning. The Mariners missed the scoring opportunities at the top of
the third when Jack Wilson got out in right-field and Michael Pineda struck-out swinging.
At the bottom of the eighth inning, Jayson Werth walked but was not able to add any run for his team while Roger Bernadina was struck-out swinging and Ian Desmond flied out towards centre-field. The pitchers raised the potential of their teams by pitching
at the feet of the batters to restrict them.
Speaking to reporters, Werth said, “It's not going to change anything in here. We're the ones that have been making the pitches and hitting the balls and winning the ballgames, so we're going to keep going.”
The Nationals’ starter, Jason Marquis was amazing with his pitching as he threw eight dominating innings with an ERA of 3.53 and did not allow any run on three hits. He gave just three walks on his 108 pitches and had four strike-outs. Marquis said, “Very
unexpected, obviously we're playing some good baseball. Obviously he was leading the ship, and things were moving along real well.”
The Mariners’ manager, Eric Wedge was frustrated with the loss and said, “We had three tough days here. Our starting pitching was fantastic. Theirs was good, too, obviously. We had opportunities and we didn't take advantage of them.”
In the ninth inning, Nix hit a sacrifice fly off left-field and Espinosa posted the first and final run of the game and led off the Nationals 1-0.
