Layups- When I layup, I do it underarm, should I start doing it overarm or is it fine?

i play district basketball and high school basketball. when u are in a game nobody should ever miss a lay up... it is true u shdnt but im pretty sure everybody has and i miss a few lay ups too. u should practice shooting over arm and underarm if ur better at shooting underarm then try to practice abit more on overarm, at the bbeginning of every district practice we have to do 20 layups from right hand, 10 lay ups underarm from right hand then same thing with the left hand. (i play u16 div2 girls) Im way betta at shooting overarm then i am with under arm but alot of the time i need to shoot underarm yet i might not get it in cause I'm better doin a normal lay up. overall i reckon shooting under arm is perfectly fine but u should learn to shoot over arm.

it really doesn't matter, if you play high school or college ball do it the way the coach wants it, but for fun i wouldn't worry about it. just as long a you make it. The coolest way to do a lay up is to do it overarm and slap the backboard when the ball comes out of you hands.

It doesn't matter. Its just fine. You can do it over or underarm. It depends on the situation. If there is a defender in front of you, you will most likely change your layup since he will alter your shot.

Well it depends if you're playing in a game or not. If you are then over arm is best otherwise your going to be blocked. Underarm lay ups are easy to read for defenders. Now when going for a layup overhead, then your arm is above the defender making it easier to score. However, if you're on a break a way and want to show of a little bit, then go for the under arm layup. If you're just playing a pickup game, then underarm is fine. When your arm is fully extended its nearly impossible to block unless the defender is foot taller than you.
