What is the difference between these two questions? If I want to discuss what I ate for dinner can I say "C'etait un bon repas"?

Repas would refer to the entire meal whereas plat would refer to a specific dish.

C'etait un bon repas would mean: it was a good meal.

C'etait un bon repas is correct to say what you had for dinner.

to  QUEL EST VOTRE REPAS PRÉFÉRÉ? the answer will be "le repas du matin"  "le repas du midi" or "le repas du soir"  since un repas is a meal,but nothing specific.

QUEL EST VOTRE PLAT PRÉFÉRÉ? is on the other hand What is your favorites dish.
